What the heck is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a collection of tools designed to allow the creation, modification organisation and removal of information from a Web site.

The CMS consists of a templating system or style of a website, and the content. The two are separate from each other, allowing your or your web designer to literally design around your content. Conversely, it allows for the addition of information irrespective of the style of the website.

Literally - and I've done this before - one person can be adding pages of content to your site while someone else is designing the layout for it. Both can work simultaneously without really getting in each other's way.

It is also an excellent choice to quickly add content to your website without having to wade through pages of HTML code to make changes, add stories, add video, etc.
